CHAIRMAN'S ADDRESS

Aloha and Hello to everyone attending Hu-La-La Con.   From All the natives here at LASFS Isle ... glad you could make it.

It's La-La Con #6 -- a tropical relaxacon this year, and the great thing is that you won't have sand in your shoes for the next year to come.   And trust me, no one's going to complain if you wear a Hawaiian Shirt for the duration of your stay.

Lots to do under the sun for the weekend ... people to meet, places to be ... however if you see a giant kettle in the middle of the yard and a friend's hat floating in it ... don't worry, it's just the Chili Cookoff.

As the Kahuna, I would like to take a moment and thank all of the natives and staff for their help in appeasing the great party gods in the sky.   I would also like to thank the GoH's for their time as well as the participants and hope that everyone will relax, have fun, and bring some good memories back to the mainland with them.

As we say "Ooo-Eee-ooo-ah-ah-Ting-Tang-Walla-Walla-Bing-Bang", "De Plane ... De Plane", and for those participating/meeting in person, the Island God "Volcana" program late Sunday ... "Watch the first Step ... it's a Doozey ..."

Enjoy the weekend. "SURFS UP!!"

Guests of Honor

MARV WOLFMAN (Guest of Honor)

Marv Wolfman is a multi-award winning writer of comic books, animation, theme park shows and rides, children's books, novels, television, internet animation and more.   He's created hundreds of characters that have been turned into movies, TV, toys and animation; Blade, The Vampire Hunter, was a hit movie starring Wesley Snipes; Cat Grant, Deathstroke and Professor Hamilton appeared on the hit TV show, "Lois and Clark"; the new version of Batman's partner, Robin, The Boy Wonder as well as the new versions of Lex Luthor and Brainiac became the standard interpretations of Superman's arch foes; and his character, Nightwing, has been voted among the top comic characters of all time.
Marv was Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics and Senior Editor at DC Comics where he created the acclaimed series, The New Teen Titans which helped revive sales poor DC Comics.   He was asked by The White House to use his Teen Titans characters in three special anti-drug comic books distributed free to millions of kids.   Marv also wrote a special two-part Titans' story in conjunction with the National Runaway Association to help runaways understand their choices.
In 1997, Marv's company, Wolfmill Entertainment, created, executive produced, story-edited and wrote "Pocket Dragon Adventures," a 52-episode animated series for the Bohbot Kids Network.   In 1999, Wolfmill sold and is now executive producing and writing a feature length animated cartoon based on the independent comic book series, "Elfquest."   The movie, set for a 2002 release, is being produced by the European Animation Group.   Wolfmill also signed with Living Toyz for a series of Elfquest toys to be released beginning this coming winter.

MOJO (Media Guest)

Mojo was the first-ever employee at Foundation Imaging.   The fact that he is still there is a sign of either his awesome talent or intense complacency.   He was hired as assistant animator for the pilot of Babylon 5.   After the pilot film was completed, there was a hiatus while Foundation and the rest of the B5 cast and crew awaited word as to whether or not a series would indeed be produced.   And waited.   And waited.
And then Mojo left for Kansas to help NewTek with the Video Toaster 4000.   He created many popular switcher effects, wrote LightWave tutorials, married a stripper in Las Vegas and returned to LA six months later (unmarried).
During the first season of B5 Mojo was given more and more responsibility until he was officially promoted to Supervising Animator during Season 2.   He directed the computer-generated visual effects for the Hugo Award-winning shows "The Coming of Shadows" and "Severed Dreams" plus many others.   During the hiatus between Seasons 3 and 4, Mojo "lost a card game with Joe Straczynski" and so B5 took over the production of visual FX in-house.   Foundation was then hired by Star Trek: Voyager, where Mojo continued to supervise and does so up to the very moment you're reading this.
When he's not sitting in front of his computer, Mojo spends the rest of his time raving, record shopping and practicing his DJing.

NOEL WOLFMAN (Fan Guest of Honor)

Noel started her fannish career as a freshman at Texas A&M University in 1977 when she joined their SF club, Cepheid Variable.   Noel held various offices at the club but pretty much gravitated toward AggieCon and other cons; it was while working on Texas conventions that Noel first met many of the California fans, including Craig Miller and Bruce Pelz.   She moved to L.A. in 1986.
Since then, she's worked on numerous ConComs for LosCon, Westercon, Nasfic and Worldcon and is on the board of Directors for SCIFI.   Amidst, fires, floods, and earthquakes, she chaired the 1994 Worldcon.
Noel is currently a Production Supervisor at Dreamworks Feature Animation and working on their film "Sinbad".   Her previous film credits include "Prince of Egypt" and "The Road to Eldorado", both for Dreamworks.   She has produced two live action short films.   The first "The Lion's Den" won a Cine Golden Eagle in 1998 and her second "Traveling Companion" was sold to The Sundance Channel.
Noel first met her husband Marv Wolfman at the 1989 LASFS Showcase.   This was the old incarnation of what is now LaLaLa Con.   That year it was chaired by Genny Dazzo.   Craig Miller was in charge of programming and arranged for Marv to speak at the event.   Marv arrived with his brand new puppy ... a lovely Keeshond named Tala.   At the time, Noel was more interested in the puppy then Marv.   But this soon changed and Noel and Marv were married in 1991.   They blame Craig and Genny to this day.

FRANK & LAURA FREAS (Artists Guest of Honor)

Frank Kelly Freas is recognized as the most prolific and popular fiction artist worldwide.   Author of three previously published books of his own illustrations, Freas was the first in his genre to make his works available as prints.   He has been publishing his prints for over twenty years, and continues to do so today.   He was the first to receive a Hugo for art work and was the first artist made Artist Guest of Honor at Chicon IV in 1982.   He was the first to receive ten Hugo Awards (he was nominated twenty times) plus an equal number of national and international art and graphics awards.
In addition to his work in Science Fiction, he was the cover artist for Mad Magazine for several years.   An official NASA mission artist, his space posters hang in the Smithsonian.   His commissioned design for the Skylab I crew patch became the focus of his article and cover painting for Analog Magazine of Science Fiction/Fact.   Freas' original paintings hang in museum, university, and private collections.
Kelly Freas' career extends from pulp era Astounding and Planet Stories through current clients in science fiction books and magazines, gaming, motion pictures, conceptual medical illustration, and advertising.
Laura Brodian Freas is a Doctor of Music Education, a classical music enthusiast and former host of Music Through the Night for the Public Radio International and the in-flight classical music programs for Delta Airlines' Delta Symphony, and an illustrator.   Her first nationally published illustrations appeared in (among others) Weird Tales, Analog, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine, and in special editions for The Easton Press.   She has been nominated for ASFS's highest award four times.   She's a former Director-at-Large of the Costumer's Guild West, founded the (San Francisco) Bay Area English Regency Society, and for two years was president of the Southern California Early Music Society.
